The Lemon Mint Plant (Monarda citriodora) is an easy to grow, subtropical perennial herb. It has a growth habit that is dense, and low to the ground, making it an excellent ground cover. The flavor fits the name, being a mix of light mint flavors and a strong lemon undertone. It does best in full sun, except for during the height of the summer, when dappled light and/or afternoon shade is best. Like other mint varieties, lemon mint will spread and take over its environment relatively quickly. Because of this, it is usually grown in a pot or container unless it is being grown as a ground cover. It is hardy through the winter in most of the continental US, dying back during freezing weather, and greening again when warmth returns.
It is excellent eaten fresh, used in teas, or added to desserts for flavoring.
