Cavendish Bananas are the standard yellow bananas you will find at your local grocery store. The advantage of Dwarf Cavendish banana plants is that unlike their mass produced, twenty foot tall relatives, they usually don't grow above seven feet! Being tropicals, banana plants need protection from any temperatures below freezing. Because Dwarf Cavendish banana plants stay on the small side, they can easily be grown in a pot and brought indoors to wait out the winter months. They take anywhere from 10 to 18 months to bear fruit.
For gardeners in areas that never freeze or only rarely and lightly do, Dwarf Cavendish bananas can be planted directly in the ground.
One of the great things about growing a banana plant is that they multiply! Throughout its lifetime, each plant will send out dozens of offshoots known as "pups". These are essentially a mini clone of the "mother" plant. These pups can be broken off of the mother plant and replanted to make more banana plants! In fact, even if you don't plan on multiplying your plants, it is best to remove the pups from the main plant so that it can focus all of its energy on producing a harvest.
